Does a Block Heater Prevent a Car Battery From Being Dead?

1. Moving to Alaska... installing an engine block heater plug on my car?

Get one installed once you get there , there cheap and easy to do . Installation is usually free . Cold starts do not hurt to bad just do not make it a habit , also burns more fuel waiting for it to warm up

2. Should I have a block heater installed?

Switch to full synthetic Mobil1 5W-20 motor oil which is the recommended viscosity for your car. The beauty of Mobil1 is it continues to pour down to -52 degrees Farenheit. This means the starter can spin the motor easier when it's cold. If your car has not had a new battery invest in one with the most cold cranking amps at 0 degrees Farenheit. Die-hard batteries do not make with the program any more. They are all imported from Mexico. AC-Delco Professional batteries and any that are made by Johnson Controls are good bets. Auto Zone, Interstate, Sams Club and Walmart Maxx are made by Jognson Controls. A block heater should be installed by a professional when money permits.

Many late model Toyota engines have a threaded receptacle to take a block heater. You may have to take a box of donuts to the local Toyota service center to find out where. I do not even remember where it is on my Prius.

No, you do not need a block heater. You need it if you live in a place like Alaska or in way way north part of Canada where temperature gets below 40 celcius degree. For all of the US states, the right engine oil viscosity and appropriate battery cranking amp should get your car start easily in a cold winter time

5. When do i have to plug in a block heater?

All night. It does not rely. It in simple terms warms up the motor vehicle...it does not prepare dinner it. i've got been in Alberta and Manitoba (Canada) in iciness - the place temp can go all the way down to -45C in one day, now and lower back with out windshield, and we left the heater related all night. No issues

6. My car's block heater broke, and the temp is -50c. Is my car gonna be OK?

no, do not try to start it. wait this cold spell out. do not go out and attempt to start and run once a day to try to melt things, if you do this, then you will have problems in the spring, wait it out. and if you have old blankets you could help cover radiator and other openings into engine compartment to help block the wind, as for your antifreeze mix, you need to change it. 50/50 mix isnt good at that temps, thats why its slurpee like, you need a higher concentration of antifreeze in your locale. may have fuel problems since theres not much there, but some drygas and fresh gas will probably work fine. and remember, that engine damage you are referring to occurs at cold start up. good luck

the factory uses an existing freeze plug hole. on the side of the block. if this has an I4, remove the freeze plug under the intake on the side of the block. not the exhaust side. keeping the heater and wires away from excessive heat if possible. if it has a V6, either bank is fine. exhaust heat will be present on either side of the engine.

My car's block heater broke, and the temp is -50c. Is my car gonna be OK?start it up and run it each day if possible to operating temp...itll be better than just letting it freeze up4. At what temp. should you use a block heater for your car?I think it depends on the vehicle. I have driven Mercedes diesels for years. I have one with 649K miles, and I have to plug it in at 20 degrees (F) or below, else it's not going to start. The other two have half or less the mileage, and most of the time I never plug them in at all. About the coldest it gets here is 15 (F) or so normally, so I do not have the extreme temps some people have. Years ago I had an Olds 98 diesel and a Cadillac Fleetwood diesel, and never plugged in either one, and they always started. My old '89 F250 Ford pickup had to be plugged in around 20 degrees F, otherwise it had difficulty starting, too. Just depends on how the engine acts when it's cold. Some just do better than others. I've had several diesel farm tractors, never had one that even had a block heater on it, never had a lot of trouble. I drive a tractor-trailer part-time, one day a week, and we've never used a block heater on it, either. Again, just depends on the individual engine, and the temps you have. Just experiment with it. It wo not hurt anything to leave it plugged in. PS - I would LOVE to hear an explanation from the moron who gave that thumbs-down on this one.5.
