A much easier way to prove gas has mass is inflate 2 ballons about the same size. Secure one to each end of a light weight dowel a foot or maybe a little longer. Tie a string to the dowel at the balencing point between the 2 balloons. Hang it so they balance, then pop one of the two balloons and you can see that the balance is disturbed. Note: you might have to do this a couple of times to get it right, as sometimes, when the balloon pops you lose a "balloon fragment" which would also make that side lighter and confuse the results

The main reason offering structural integrity.However, one of the other main reason is from processing point of view. Plastic bottles are prepared by a process called blow molding. In blow molding, a plastic parison (hollow tube) is extruded and placed between two halves of a mold and blown under pressure to produce the bottles. In order to seal the hollow lower end of the parison, a 'pinch off' is present in the mold which bends the lower hollow end and flattens it. It would float because the salinity of the ocean water is a higher density than the fresh water. That's why people float in the Great Salt Lake in Utah

It's safe for a little while, but also be careful of the bottle expanding and exploding if its out in the heat too long, since alcohol begins to evaporate at higher temperatures. I've heard that can happen anyway, never actually seen it myself though

No, a plastic bottle top has small little needle like prongs on the end of it. If you open a bottle of liquid you would notice the bottle is stuck to the ring by prongs. If the betta gets close to the prongs it could lead to the fin getting ripped which not only is super painful for the fish its permanent. Also bottle caps and be sunk because of the bowl inside of it. I would try a washed off ping pong ball. They are safe for the betta and the float
